Anak Ngo Waray Palad [Unfortunate Child] (SATB)
Among other indigenous Visayan songs, “Anak Nga Waray Palad” (Unfortunate Child) was originally researched and retrieved from the island of Samar by Priscilla V. Magdamo and published in a book entitled, “Philippine Folk Songs: Songs of the Visayas” in 1957 by the Silliman University Foundation. The song is a perfect example of unabated Filipino sentimentality. It represents the Eastern Visayan notion of “kalo-oy” or pity as well as “pag-ilob” or to persevere and suffer in silence for someone who is believed to be neglected, abandoned, or impoverished. In this choral arrangement, the song is primarily narrated by a female soloist who tells the story of the unfortunate mother and child.
