Sang Nila Utama (SSAA)
This composition delves into the rich tapestry of Malay legend, inspired by John Leyden’s account and translation of the founding of Singapura in the Malay Annals (1821). It opens with pentatonic clusters, paying homage to the region’s musical heritage, and gradually transitions into full diatonicism and contemporary colors, symbolizing the journey from the familiar to the unknown.
As Sang Nila Utama gazes upon the white sands of Temasek from a vantage point in Batam, the music captures his yearning for discovery and conquest. The narrative takes a dramatic turn as the prince and his crew face the wrath of the seas. This struggle is vividly portrayed through intense, evocative music, with wails and siren-like motifs echoing the chaos of the storm. The prince’s transformative act of surrender—offering his crown to calm the tempest—marks a pivotal moment in the piece.
The work concludes with a tranquil melody as Sang Nila Utama and his companions encounter the regal Singha, the lion,
