Mary’s Anguish (SSAA)
This is a deeply evocative and modern dramatic work that captures the sheer weight of a mother's grief at the foot of the cross. It was deliberately crafted without a discernible melody to reflect the indescribable nature of her suffering. The piece unfolds through three scenes, beginning with a harrowing depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus that immediately immerses the listener in the gravity of the event. The middle section transitions into Mary’s lamentation, interweaving the traditional Latin Stabat Mater text with striking Old Hungarian verses where she begs death to take her instead of her Son. The work finishes by shifting perspectives, capturing the collective mourning and shared grief of the bystanders witnessing her pain.
Musically, the piece demands excellent tonal control and a sensitive handling of the bilingual text. To enhance the thematic realism of the opening crucifixion scene, the composer provides an optional instrumentation choice where the bass drum in the first eleven bars can be replaced with the sound of a hammer striking a stiff wooden panel, vividly evoking the driving of nails before the standard bass drum resumes. Mary’s Anguish can be an extraordinary, deeply moving centerpiece for sacred concerts, Holy Week services, or advanced choral festivals.
