Benedict Lo

Benedict Lo is a choral conductor, educator, and composer deeply committed to shaping the landscape of Malaysian choral music and youth development. Born and raised in Kuching, Sarawak, his music and arrangements are a vibrant reflection of Borneo’s rich cultural tapestry, capturing the unique stories, indigenous languages, and musical heritage of Sarawak to share with the global choral community. Driven by a passion for music education and heritage preservation, Benedict's ensembles frequently champion local folk songs. This dedication to advancing culture among youth earned his work formal recognition from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

Beyond composition, Benedict is a highly accomplished conductor and community leader. He serves as the conductor of the award-winning SJPS Chamber Choir, leading the ensemble to international acclaim with an impressive record of 9 Gold Awards, 2 Silver Awards, and a Special Recognition for Most Outstanding Malaysian Youth Choir (Folklore Category) at the Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod (2024). In 2023, he earned the Secondary Australian Kodály Certificate in Music Education and founded the Kuching Choral Society (KCS), an organization dedicated to cultivating a love for choral singing across all levels in the community.

Benedict’s contributions have been widely celebrated within the region. In 2024, he was honored with the prestigious MCE Malaysian Teacher’s Award and appointed Festival Director of the Sarawak International Choral Festival, a landmark event that united over 25 choirs from across Malaysia. Through his evocative compositions and unwavering dedication, Benedict JC Lo continues to ensure that the voices of Sarawak and Malaysia resonate far beyond their shores.
