Koyu No Tebulul [A Tree On A Hill] (SATB div)
Koyu No Tebulul, meaning A Tree On A Hill, is based on a T'boli traditional song. The T’boli people are one of the indigenous peoples of South Cotabato in southern Mindanao, Philippines. In this particular work, the composer tries to capture the reverberation of one who sings by the mountain cliff by doubling and bouncing the syllable of the text. The noisy ringing of the “R” consonant expresses both the chirping of the birds as well as the stridulating crickets.
English Translation
There is a beautiful tree on top of the mountain. It has soft leaves and needle-like thorns. I wish to climb that tree on the mountain. A bird rests on its branches. How I wish I can catch the bird. But I know I cannot.
