O Magnum Mysterium (SATB)
In writing my own setting of this known text from Christmas Day matins (early morning prayers), I wanted to evoke a sense of gentle awe and wonder. The piece begins calmly, almost meditatively, as we are introduced to "the great mystery" of animals seeing the newborn baby in a lowly manger. The consoling cluster chords used in the phrase "Beata virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt" (O blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear) contrast with the triumphant proclamation of the infant's identity and mission - "Dominum Jesum Christum" (Lord Jesus Christ). Finally, the work ends with glorious, near-endless Alleluias, celebrating the dawning of a new day filled with joy, hope, and love. "O Magnum Mysterium" may be programmed for both religious service or a secular concert during or even after the Christmas season.
