Wong Chee Wei
Wong graduated from Department of Music in Malaysian Institute of Art , majoring in composition. He attended Xi’an Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of China renowned composer Prof Rao Yu-Yan and obtained a Degree in Music. Wong since then served as Choir conductor, and actively worked as a music composer and arranger back in Malaysia. He won a scholarship in 2014, and received his doctorate from Nanjing Normal University in 2018, under the tutelage of renowned Chinese musicologist Prof Xu Yuan Yong.
Wong is committed to in promoting the new music composition, over the years, he led the music organization and promote the mission of Malaysia’s new music, from the performances and concerts, lectures, publishing, recording and training courses. Year 2009/2010, invited to participate in “Forumplus” – local composer music concert which organized by Malaysia Philharmonic Orchestra. Year 2011/2016, Butterfly Lovers for Music, Dance, Video Art commissioned by Malaysian famous dancer Lee Swee Keong. The work has been nominated for Malaysia’s most prestigious art award, the Boh Cameron Art Award. Year 2012/2014, invited to participate in “Hark ! the songs of homeland” – Malaysia contemporary new art songs and choir songs concert which organized by Chin Yong Music Festival. Year 2013/2015, invited to participate in the planning of the international modern music festival “sound bridge”, and premiered a number of new works, organized by Society of Malaysian Contemporary Composers. He has received the excellent award in the 5 th China-ASEAN Music Festival Composition Competition, and the excellent award in the 3 rd China National Music Festival “Academy Awards” Composition Competition.
His music has been performed in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Australia, UK and Malaysia. Wong is currently the vice president of the Society of Malaysian Contemporary Composers and a lecturer at Malaysia Institute of Art.
