About Gong, Ai, Na (SSA)

...About Gong, Ai, Na... was commissioned by Susanna Saw for the Malaysian Institute of Art Ladies Chorus in 2009 as the ensemble prepared to represent Malaysia at an international choral competition. The brief was simple yet ambitious: to create a work that would showcase the country's rich cultural heritage through a contemporary choral language.

In response, Dr Wong drew inspiration from the musical traditions of Malaysia's three major cultural communities. The title itself serves as a musical map: "Gong" represents the resonant bronze instruments of the Malay gamelan tradition, "Ai" evokes the expressive vocality of Chinese singing traditions, and "Na" draws on the energetic rhythmic language of Indian dance and music.

These three musical ideas are woven into a unified choral tapestry. Interlocking rhythmic patterns, shimmering metallic sonorities, lyrical vocal lines, and driving vocal percussion create a vibrant musical dialogue that celebrates Malaysia's multicultural identity. Rather than presenting these traditions as separate musical quotations, the work fuses them into a contemporary choral idiom, reflecting the meeting, interaction, and shared evolution of the country's diverse cultural heritage.
