Soleram (SATB)

Soleram is a beloved traditional lullaby from Riau, Indonesia, tenderly passed down through generations to soothe sleeping children while weaving in life’s core values. Built upon the classic Malay pantun (a traditional poetic quatrain) the song carries timeless gentle reminders of kindness, integrity, and self-respect. Its most famous stanza offers a simple yet poignant truth: as life introduces us to new companions, we must never forget the old friends who walked alongside us from the start.

In this expressive SATB arrangement by Indonesian composer Ken Steven, the intimacy of the folk song is transformed through rich, atmospheric vocal writing. Intricate rhythmic details, warm suspensions, and voice-leading pass between sopranos and tenors in the first half. A striking key change then shifts the piece into a broad, resonant homophonic texture that is crowned by a soaring soprano descant that builds into a powerful, sweeping climax.
