The Cathedral (SATB)
The Cathedral draws its text from Thomas Jones Jr.’s Sonnets of the Cross, reflecting on the Christian belief that Christ’s sacrifice brings freedom and redemption to humanity. The poetry intertwines sacred devotion with mystical imagery, creating an atmosphere that feels contemplative, reverent, and profoundly otherworldly.
The music mirrors this spiritual landscape. It opens with a restrained and spacious character, allowing the text to unfold with clarity and sincerity. As the work progresses, textures expand and intensify, moving from quiet reflection to moments of grandeur and urgency. The final sections shift into a more impassioned tone, capturing both the desperation and the awe inherent in the poem’s message.
