Sunset (SATB)
“Sunset” was commissioned by the Ministry of Education as a set piece for the Singapore Youth Festival 2005. Scored for SATB choir, the piece features a trilingual text—English, Malay, and Tamil—reflecting Singapore’s multicultural identity. The English text is adapted from William Blake’s poem “Night,” while the Malay and Tamil texts evoke traditional Southeast Asian cultural expressions.
The composition incorporates elements of gamelan-inspired textures, Chinese pipa motifs, and Indian harmonic influences, blending them seamlessly into a uniquely Singaporean choral work. The narrative of “Sunset” portrays multi-racial workers bidding each other good evening at the end of the day, transitioning through vibrant musical depictions of Malay folk dances and Indian musical performances, and culminating in a communal sunset chorale that symbolizes harmony and unity.
