青春舞曲 [Dance of Youth] (SATB)

This lively folk song from Xinjiang reflects on the fleeting nature of youth through simple but striking imagery. The text contrasts nature’s cycles of the sun that rises again and flowers that bloom each year with the one thing that never returns: youth itself.

When the song entered the Chinese concert repertoire in the twentieth century, it retained the refrain “别的那呀呦 (Bie de na ya yo)”, a phonetic folk exclamation associated with the song’s Xinjiang origins. The phrase functions less as a literal translation than as a rhythmic call within the music, preserving the flavour of the region’s folk singing style.
